(Excerpt from Interludes (Third Series): Being Two Essays,...)
Excerpt from Interludes (Third Series): Being Two Essays, a Ghost Story, and Some Verses In the Preface to my volume of "Poems" published in 1897, I seized the opportunity of thanking my critics for their kindly welcome of my "Interludes." I now have further to thank them for their still heartier appreciation of my "Poems." With some temerity I challenged their approval of the Sacred Verses; and I am rather surprised, and much pleased to find that they meet with general acceptance. That they are not as good as they ought to be is very certain, and I wish they were better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (If my readers can find as much pleasure in reading what I...)
If my readers can find as much pleasure in reading what I have written, as I have found in the writing thereof, they will be happy enough. If they should be disappointed I am truly sorry; but can scarcely attribute my want of success to old age after what I have here written upon that subject. I am not without hope that my kind critics may discover that this fifth series is in no way inferior to those which have preceded it.
