Background

Connell, Horatio was born on March 15, 1876 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Horatio Pennock and Anne (Lay lock) C.: educated private and public schools, Philadelphia.

Education

Studied voice with Julius Stockhausen, of Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany, 1900-1904.

Career

Began professionally as lieder singer in Germany. Various tours in England, 1904-1909. Returned to the United States, 1909.

Concert and oratorio singer. Has appeared at Worcester (Massachusetts) Festival, Chicago North Shore Festival, Ann Arbor (Michigan) Festival, Bach Festival (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), and as soloist with New York, Philadelphia and Minneapolis symphony orchestras. Chicago Apollo Club, etc.

Head of vocal department Chau tauqua Institution, summer session, since 1916. Member voca faculty. Juilliard Graduate School, New New York department of relief for deserving musicians, Theodore Presser Foundation.
