He took up architectural study in his youth, hadan apprenticeship under H. H. Holly.
He served as chief draftsman in his office of H. H. Holly, and in 1887 was taken into partnership. Mr. Holly is said to have been one of the first American architects to introduce the Queen Anne style into this country, "ably seconded by Mr. Jelliff.”
During later years Mr. Jelliff practiced under his own name, and a number of houses in New York state were planned and built by him. The former home of Thomas Edison is ascribed to him, also a laboratory built on the latter's estate.
