(An inspiring call to humility in Christian service and re...)
An inspiring call to humility in Christian service and renewed compassion for those without Christ. This timeless classic by Horatius Bonar, Scottish Presbyterian divine of 1808-89, offers spiritual, heart-searching counsel to all believers, especially ministers of the gospel. Though written over a century ago, these words are as timely and convicting today as when first delivered. They represent a gripping challenge to put aside all that interferes with the ministry of the gospel to labor urgently and "be spent" for Christ. Drawing from Owen, Baxter, McCheyne, Edwards, and others, Bonar summons us to faith, zeal, and love for lost souls. He warns of "the tragedy of a barren ministry" and gives special attention to the need for ministerial confession of sin, quoting extensively from an extraordinarily moving public confession by the ministers of the Church of Scotland in 1651.

(Our desire is to minister to the saints in the consolatio...)
Our desire is to minister to the saints in the consolation and admonition of the Lord. We would seek to bear their burdens, to bind up their wounds, and to dry up at least some out of their many tears. To comfort those who mourn is not only to act in obedience to the command, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ"; it is to walk by the side of JESUS in His visits of mercy to His suffering saints on earth; nay, it is to be fellow-workers with the HOLY GHOST as the Church's Comforter in all her tribulations and distresses.

(Most people know Horatius Bonar for his soul-searching hy...)
Most people know Horatius Bonar for his soul-searching hymns but he was also a respected author and had a strong concern for evangelisation and the onward life and witness of Christians. Bonar's pastoral books always address people realistically, there is no 'super spiritualism' here or an unattainable standard for the Christian life. Everyone can benefit from this book. Bonar explains that the way of peace, and the way of holiness, lay side by side. Peace may come first but the Spirit of peace Is the Spirit of holiness. You cannot say that you have peace whilst living with sin, you cannot say you have holiness if you are not consciously reconciled with God and fellow believers. Each chapter starts with a list of helpful scripture passages to set the scene for the ensuing discussion. Bonar deals with rebirth, the indwelling, of the Spirit, what gives us strength against sin, the power of the cross, the role of the law, the influence of the world, and a special section on Romans chapter seven.Bonar also helps us understand how concepts of holiness and spirituality are changed outside the Christian viewpoint. He shows the dangers of harsh orthodoxy, un-anchored idealism, mechanical devotion, superstition, self-righteous mortification, the sentimentalism of liberal theology and the woolly, warm dreams of Eastern pantheism.

Horatius Bonar was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on the 19th of December 1808; the son of James Bonar.
Bonar was educated at the high school and university of his native city. He had in 1853 received the D. D. degree from Aberdeen University.
After a term of mission work at Leith, he was appointed parish minister of Kelso in 1837, and at the Disruption of 1843 became minister of the newly formed Free Church, where he remained till 1866, when he went to the Chalmers memorial church, Edinburgh.
He died on the 31st of July 1889.
Bonar was a prolific writer of religious literature, and edited several journals, including the Christian Treasury, the Presbyterian Review and the Quarterly Journal of Prophecy, but his best work was done in hymnology, and he published three series of Hymns of Faith and Hope between 1857 and 1866 (new ed. , 1886). Nearly every modern hymnal contains perhaps a score of his hymns, including "Go, labour on, " "I heard the voice of Jesus say, " "Here, О my Lord, I see Thee face to face, " "When the weary, seeking rest.
