Horikawa Kunihiro was retainer of Yoshisuke Ito, Lord of Obi, and in 1587 he began attending the Ashikaga Gakko (college of the Shogunate) at Shimotsuke, Tochigi Prefecture. And a few years later proceeded to Kyoto to become a pupil of Myoju Umetada at Horikawa. He was eventually granted the title of Shinanono-Kami and became famous as a swordsmith.
