This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Tracing the history of Universalism from A.D. 90 all the ...)
Tracing the history of Universalism from A.D. 90 all the way to A.D. 1500, this is an important volume in the literature of the Universalist Church. Argues that Universalism was widely accepted in the earlier centuries of the Church. Hosea Ballou 2nd (1796-1861) was Tufts University's first President and its first Professor of History and Intellectual Philosophy. He was the grand-nephew of Hosea Ballou (1771-1851), author of A Treatise on Atonement and prominent early Universalist. In his History of Opinions on the Scriptural Doctrine of Retribution, Edward Beecher said of Ballou's book, "The work is one of decided ability, and is written with great candor and a careful examination of authorities."

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1866. Excerpt: ... THE RESPONSIBILITY OF UNIVERSALISTS. Unto Whomsobveb Much Is Given, Op Him Shall Much Be Bequired; And To Whom Men Have Committed Much, Of Him They Will Ask The More.--Luke xii. 48. It would be the most agreeable to my feelings, to speak to you on some of those peculiar doctrines of the gospel that distinguish our faith; or, to dwell on the remarkable success which the great Head of the church has vouchsafed to our common ministry, and to indulge the sentiments that are naturally called forth by the encouraging tokens in our present condition as a religious body. All these are topics of unquestionable importance, in their places; and I feel that much might be said on them with perfect justice, and profit too. But I suppose the preacher of the Occasional Discourse before this Convention, will be expected to take a somewhat different kind of theme. His business, if I understand it, is more especially to call us to a sober review of our ways, and sense of our obligations; to admonish; to warn us of dangers we are exposed to; to remind us, not so much of the excellences to which we have already attained, as of our deficiencies, and of what remains yet unaccomplished. And if there are any pregnant faults among us, as who can deny there are in every body of men on earth, he is to deal with these evils; to speak of them kindly, indeed, but plainly, nevertheless, and faithfully. If in attempting such a work, on the present occasion, I should sometimes appear to use considerable freedom, and to assume a tone that does not properly belong to me, I beg it may be remembered that it is only in the character of your spokesman that I do it, sensible that, personally, I have need rather to be admonished by you. Occasional Sermon, delivered before the United States Conve...
