Hoshun (real personal name: Saburo) Yamaguchi was born on October 15, 1893, in Hokkaido, Japan.
In 1923, Hoshun Yamaguchi graduated from Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts. Intended to study Western painting, but turned to Japanese painting. Studied under Eikyu Matsuoka.
Hoshun Yamaguchi received a commission to paint a piece for the new Tokyo Imperial Palace. The piece titled "Kaede (maples)" is a large painting measuring 2.74x2.5 metres. It is located on the cedar door of the east corridor of the Seiden hall. Opposite of it on the other side is "Sakura (cherry)" by Meiji Hashimoto. The preparatory drawing for the panel at a 4:1 scale dating to 1967 is in the Yamatane Museum of Art in Tokyo. His masterpieces include Tojo-no-Hana (Flowers on Chair) and Manatsu-no-Omoide (Memory of Midsummer).
Several of his pictures were accepted for exhibition by Imperial Art Institute. His picture "Mt. Nachi in Mikumano" was awarded the Imperial Art Institute Prize (1926).
