Background
Hosokawa was born in 1563, in Kyoto, Japan. Son of Fuji taka (Yusai). Born in Kyoto, he followed Nobunaga Oda.

Hosokawa Tadaoki

Career
In 1580, Nobunaga made him lord of Tango Province (Hyogo Prefecture), with a fief of 120,000 koku of rice, with his castle at Miyazu. Mitsuhide Akechi， whose daughter he married, requested Tadatoki to support him after Mitsuhide assassinated Nobunaga. Tadaoki rejected the request and fought on the side of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. He distinguished himseli in many battles including the Ko-rean expedition. After Hideyoshi died, he belonged to the camp of 丄eyasu Toku- gawa. In the SekiSahara battle in 1600, he, together with Masanori Fukushima, formed the spearnead of the Tokugawa forces. For his exploits in that battle, Tadaoki was made lord of Nakatsu (Oita Prefecture), with a fief of 300,000 koku. In 1602, he moved to Kokura Castle. Rendered distinguished services in the Osaka Campaign against the Toyotomis in 1614-15. In his late years, he became a Buddhist priest and was initiated into tea ceremony by Sen-no-Rikyu, the great master of the art.
