細川忠利
Son of Tadaoki. His mother was Gratia, a Catholic who was the third daughter of Mitsuhide Akechi. He was taken to Edo Castle, Ieyasu Tokugawa’s headquarters, as a hostage (1600). Marri-ed Chiyo-hime, adopted daughter of Hide- tada, son of Ieyasu (1609).
Participated in Ieyasu's campaign against Osaka Castle of the Toyotomis (1614) and was made lord of Kokura in Kyushu, with a fief of 159,600 koku (1620). Because of his father’s exploits, he was promoted to Lord of Kumamoto (540,000 koku) (1632). In 1638, suppressed the revolts of Christians at Shimabara at the order of the Shogunate and killed Tokisada Amakusa, one of his retainers who headed the revolt.
