Hosshinno Ryojun was born in 1603.
He was adopted by Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa (1615) and became a priest the same year. He was the first Chief Abbot of the Chiou-in Temple, head temple of the Jodo Sect, in Kyoto. He was exiled to Mountain Temmoku (1643) for drinking and wounding people. Returned to Kyoto (1659) and lived at the Shinzenkoji Temple. He returned to secular life and called himself Ishin-an.
