Career
Shirabyoshi (dancing woman) was a beautiful dancer and singer in the Heian Period. Gio, another Shira- bydshi, who was a favorite with Kiyomori Taira, the most powerful warlord of the time, brought Hotoke Gozen in his presence. Impressed by her beauty and dancing, Kiyomori became fond of her, forgetting his former favorite, Gio. Disheartened, Gio and her mother and sister became nuns at the Ojoin Temple in Saga near Kyoto. Hotoke, learning this, was so moved that she became a nun too and visited Gio at the temple. There Gio and Hotoke together lived their remaining years. Hotoke was only 17 years old when she became a nun.
