Hotta was born in 1918 in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan.
Graduated from Keio Jniver- city (1932).
Went to China (1945); after return (1947) served with Sekai Nippo newspaper. Meantime wrote poems and novels. His first acknowledgement came with publication of Sokoku Soshitsu (The Lost Fatherland) and Haguruma (A Cogwheel) and then by becoming recipient of Akutagawa Prize with Hirobano Kodoku (Solitude in the Plaza) and Kankan (Hankan or Chinese word for “traitor”).
