Career
He lived in Grimes County, Texas for most of his life and was the son of poor farmers. He was educated at Straight University in New Orleans, Louisiana and at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. After returning to Texas, he became involved in politics.
He served only one term.
They had four children. He died in 1920.
