Howard Bond was born on July 23, 1931 in Napoleon, Ohio, United States.
Howard Bond obtained a bachelor's degree in music from Bowling Green State University in Ohio (1953) and two masters from the University of Michigan, one in music (1958) and one in mathematics (1961).
Howard Bond started working as a music teacher in Blissfield, Michigan (1953-1958), and from 1961 to 1979 was employed as a computer programmer by General Motors, Bendix, the University of Michigan and Horiba Instruments. He worked full time as a freelance photographer. The artist used view cameras up to 11 x 14 to make black-and-white photographs.

Howard Bond has been a member of the Ann Arbor Art Association since 1968 and of Friends of Photography since 1970.
