The young man worked as draftsman in the local office of Stone & Carpenter, later practiced under the following firm: Hoppin, Reid & Hoppin; Hoppin & Ely, 1895-1907; Hoppin & Field, 1907-24.
After being elected an Associate of the A.I.A. in 1880. M. Hoppin was raised to Institute Fellowship in 1889, and as a member of the Rhode Island Chapter served as President from 1891 to 1893, and again from 1910 to 1912 of the several outstanding buildings in Providence which he designed independently or with associates should be cited: Psi Upsilon Club House at Brown University; original building of the Rhode Island School of Design; Goddard Wing and Weld House at Butler Hospital; Cassell Hall, Brown University; First Christian Science Church, 1906-13; Central High School; Memorial Church, Pomfret, Conn. (Hoppin, Reid & Hoppin); All Saints Church, Pontiac, R. I.
