Howard Markel was born on April 23, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Son of Samuel and Bernice (Lumberg) Markel.
Markel received from the University of Michigan a Bachelor Arts in 1982 and a Doctor of Medicine (cum laude) in 1986. He also earned from Johns Hopkins University of Medicine his Ph.D. in 1994.
Markel worked as an intern and resident in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, from 1986 to 1989, became attending physician and fellow in adolescent medicine and history of medicine between 1989 and 1993. Later he worked at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as an assistant professor of pediatrics and attending physician at university hospitals in 1993, then became director of History Center for the Health Sciences since 1996.
Besides, Markel is the George E. Wantz Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Michigan and Director of the University of Michigan's Center for the History of Medicine. He is also professor of Psychiatry, Health Management and Policy, History, and Pediatrics and Communicable Diseases.
Among his numerous awards are Generalist Faculty Award from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, History of Medicine Scholars Award from Burroughs-Wellcome Foundation, Shannon Director’s Award and Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health and Harriet Lane Home Fellowship Award from Johns Hopkins University.
Howard has been a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Historical Association, American Jewish Historical Society, YIVO Institute for Jewish Studies, American Association for the History of Medicine.
Howard married Marcia Deborah Gordin on September 20, 1987, but she died on October 16, 1988.
