McClenahan was born on October 19, 1872 in Port Deposit, Maryland, United States; the son of John Megredy and Laura Jane (Farrow) McClenahan.
McClenahan completed the electrical engineering course at Princeton University in 1895. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree from the same university.
McClenahan began his career as an instructor of physics at College of New Jersey (nowadays University of Princeton) in 1897. Nine years later he became a professor at the same college. Also Howard worked as a dean of the College of New Jersey from 1912 to 1925. Since 1925 Howard was a secretary at Franklin Institute. Also since 1930 he was a director at Benjamin Franklin Memorial and Franklin Institute Museum. Howard advanced the cause of scientific progress by encouraging and broadening popular interest in the mechanical and electrical arts.
McClenahan was an honorary member of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and of the Board of Directors of the Deutsches Museum of Munich. He was also a trustee of Lincoln University, an associate trustee for graduate study of the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Philosophical Society.
On November 1, 1899 Howard McClenahan married Bessie L. Lee. They have 3 children.
