Background
Howard was born on February 8, 1806 in New York City, New York, United States, the son of Arthur Joseph and Susanna (Brown) Stansbury, and a grandson of Joseph Stansbury.
(Howard Stansbury was a major in the U.S. Army Corps of To...)
Howard Stansbury was a major in the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. His most notable achievement was leading a two-year expedition (1849-1851) to survey the Great Salt Lake and its surroundings. The expedition report entitled Exploration and survey of the valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, including a reconnaissance of a new route through the Rocky Mountains was published in 1852 providing the first serious scientific exploration of the flora and fauna of the Great Salt Lake Valley as well as a favorable impression of the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who had settled there beginning in 1847. In its Exploring the American West series the Smithsonian Institution Press took this classic and reprinted it word for word in this printing with an introduction by Don D. Fowler, president of the Society for American Archaeology and from 1988 to 1991 he held a Foundation Professorship from the University of Nevada, Reno. He is now the Mamie Kleberg Professor of Historic Preservation and Anthropology.

Howard Stansbury (1806-63) trained as a civil engineer and became a major in the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers. He oversaw a number of construction projects and later had geographical features and plant and animal species named after him. In 1849-51, Stansbury led an expedition to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Utah to carry out a scientific survey, as well as to scout possible locations for a transcontinental railroad and to evaluate emigration trails. This book, first published in 1852, is Stansbury's account of that expedition, and of his party's encounters with Brigham Young and the recently-founded Mormon community, of which he formed a favourable opinion. As well as being illustrated with scenes from the expedition and examples of fauna and flora, the report includes appendices on zoology, botany, geology and palaeontology, written by experts of the time in those fields.

Excerpt from Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah: Including a Reconnoissance of a New Route Through the Rocky Mountains Loring, for the purpose; but who, before its completion, was required to rejoin his regiment, for service on the Pacific coast. In the Department of Natural Science, from my very limited time, I was not successful in securing the services of a competent assistant. Yet, although as much has not been accomplished as I had anticipated, it is hoped that some additional light has been thrown upon the Geological formation and Natural History of these almost unknown regions. The papers of Professors Baird, Haldeman, Torrey, and Hall, together with the analyses of Dr. Gale, will not be without interest to the lovers of science. To these gentlemen, and to Messrs. Girard Peale, I am much indebted for the labours which, from a regard to the general interests of science, they have bestowed toward rendering the present report more complete and satis factory. Howard was born on February 8, 1806 in New York City, New York, United States, the son of Arthur Joseph and Susanna (Brown) Stansbury, and a grandson of Joseph Stansbury.
He was educated as a civil engineer.
Between 1832 and the end of 1835 he surveyed the route of the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad and the mouths of the Cumberland, Vermilion, and Chagrin rivers, and had charge of a number of public works in Indiana.
In 1836, as a preliminary to the project of improving the harbor of Richmond, Virginia, he surveyed the lower part of the James River, and in the early part of 1838 was engaged in the survey of a proposed railroad route from Milwaukee to the Mississippi.
He entered the army on July 7, 1838, as a lieutenant of topographical engineers, and on July 18, 1840, was made a captain. His work during the next eight years included various surveys of the lake regions and a minute survey of the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
In 1849 while being in command of an exploring and surveying expedition to the Great Salt Lake region, with a party of eighteen men, including Lieutenant John Williams Gunnison as second in command, he left Fort Leavenworth on the last day of May and proceeded by South Pass to Fort Bridger. Here he divided his party and, engaging James Bridger as his guide, explored a new route to the lake midway between the Bear River and the Echo Canyon trails.
Reuniting the two sections of his party near Salt Lake City and dismissing Bridger, he marched northward and after some months circled the lake.
For various reasons the work was not completed as planned, and in the summer of the following year he started on his return. At Fort Bridger, September 5, 1850, again employing Bridger as guide, he determined upon the exploration of a route to the settlements more direct than that by way of South Pass.
Proceeding directly eastward, he traversed the course subsequently followed by the Overland Stage and, in the main, by the Union Pacific Railway; and though not the first to use it was the first to recommend its feasibility and to make it widely known.
His report, "Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, Including a Reconnoissance of a New Route through the Rocky Mountains" (printed in 1852 as Senate Executive Document 3, 32 Cong. , special session of the Senate) won immediate popularity in England as well as in the United States, and during the next four years was several times reprinted by the Lippincotts.
During the next ten years he was engaged in surveys in the lake region and in the construction of military roads in Minnesota.
On September 28, 1861, he was retired, but he later reentered the service and was appointed mustering and disbursing officer for Wisconsin, with station at Madison, where he died.
