Ticknor, Howard Malcom was born on July 4, 1836 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Son of William Davis and Emeline Staniford (Holt) Ticknor.

Education

Master of Arts, Harvard, 1856. Studied vocal music and languages in Italy, 1868-1878.

Career

Member of the publishing firm of Ticknor & Fields, 1864 et seq. Assistant editor (with Lowell) Atlantic Monthly. Editor Our Young Folks, from inception to 1869.

During Italian residence, 1868-1878, in consular service, generally as vice consul, at Naples, Venice, Rome.

Foreign correspondent for American and London journals. Instructor elocution, Harvard and Brown university and in important schools, Saint Paul’s, et cetera, 1878-1887.

Music. and dramatic critic Boston Daily Advertiser, Globe, Herald, Journal, et cetera, 1878-1904.
