From the Ends of the Earth; the Peoples of Israel
(From Yemen, Egypt, North Africa, Iraq, eastern Europe, Am...)
From Yemen, Egypt, North Africa, Iraq, eastern Europe, America, and many
other lands, immigrants poured into Israel after its rebirth in May, 1948 people radically different from the Zionist idealists who had participated in the founding of the State. Many of them had through the Nazi inferno; others had suffered intensely under Communist rule. By the time they arrived in Israel, they were incapable of further sacrifice and hardship and responded slowly to vigorous demands of Israeli citizenship. For many of the new immigrants, especially those
who had escaped from Moslem lands, the Western oriented, progressive, and
secular society of Israel was a drastic change. The story of the adjustment of these diverse people to their new lives, and their contributions to the new land told through sketches, personal accounts, and lively anecdotes provides valuable new insights into modern Jewish History.
