(Legend has it that a golem was a man-made man created fro...)
Legend has it that a golem was a man-made man created from earth by kabbalistic magic to protect the Jews against the consequences of the historic blood libel. The blood libel was a lie that said that the Jews killed gentile children to obtain blood for their Passover celebration. The libel incited the Christian community to rise up against the Jews, set fire to their homes, and commit murders, massacres, and pogroms against them. In Howard Rubenstein's play, the questions arise, Will the golem succeed in its mission as protector? Can a golem ever succeed?

(Euripides' THE TROJAN WOMEN is considered by many to be t...)
Euripides' THE TROJAN WOMEN is considered by many to be the greatest of anti-war plays. Rubenstein, whose translation of AGAMEMNON, has been acclaimed, has now translated Euripides' masterpiece in clear American English. Aristophanes and Aristotle (and some modern critics as well) objected to the original prologue and choral odes on the grounds that they were irrelevant to the play. Rubenstein has written a prologue and choral odes that are relevant, in addition to being lucid. In addition, Rubenstein has added stage directions, as he did in the case of AGAMEMNON which enhances the play's readability and playability.

(Romance of the Western Chamber--A Musical based on Xi Xia...)
Romance of the Western Chamber--A Musical based on Xi Xiang Ji, a play that is a masterpiece of Chinese literature, tells one of the great love stories of world literature. Xi Xiang Ji dates from the 13th century, with authorship attributed to Wang Shifu and/or Guan Hanqing. The play has held the Chinese stage almost continuously for eight centuries in spite of intermittent condemnations for "obscenity." It is a "rich girl, poor boy" love story, with almost insurmountable obstacles in the way of the lovers, many of them overcome with the help of the heroine's devoted attendant and friend. Howard Rubenstein condensed the Chinese play from many hours to a few, and rendered it in standard American English in free verse. Max Lee adapted traditional Chinese folk tunes to Rubenstein's lyrics, and scored the melodies for western instruments. The scores have been published, and recordings of the music have been published on CDs. Romance of the Western Chamber--A Musical had its premiere at the Dongpo Theatre, Hangzhou China, on September 9, 20ll, to acclaim. That was the first time a version of the play was performed in the English language, with Rubenstein's words spoken and sung on stage and simultaneously accompanied by Mandarin supertitles.
