Treat received his country"s highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor. Treat"s medal was won when he risked his life to save a wounded comrade at Buzzard"s Roost on May 11, 1864. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Howell B. Treat, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 11 May 1864, while serving with Company I, 52d Ohio Infantry, in action at Buzzard"s Roost, Georgia.
