Miss Yang was born in Soochow, Kiangsu, China.
She received her early education at Laura Haysrood High School in Soochow, China and then went to America and attended Mount Holyoke, where ahe received her Bachelor of Arts degree, and Columbia University, where she got her Master of Arts in education.
Hsi-chang Yang was a secretary of the student department of the National Committee Y.W.C.A. (Young Women's Christian Association) in 1919-1924 and executive of the same department in 1925-1929, principal of McTyeire School from June, 1929 and delegate to the first All-India Christian Women's Student Conference at Calcutta in December 1923 as well as delegate to the convention of the International Federation of University Women in Oslo, Norway, in 1924.
