The story begins in Nanjing. Suspecting that her husband Wang Ping is cheating on her, Lin Xue hires an unemployed photographer named Luo Haitao to follow him. Indeed, Wang is having a steamy affair with Jiang Cheng, a gay man. Lin confronts Wang and storms into Jiang's office to make a scene. Jiang cuts off all contact with Wang. He becomes depressed and hooks up and has sex with Luo. Luo actually has a girlfriend, Li Jing, who loves him. Wang becomes desperate and commits suicide. Meanwhile, Li's factory is shut down by the police. As her boss has been good to her, Li helps to secure his release from detention, but comes to the realization he just wants to get into her pants. Jiang is devastated after hearing Wang's suicide. He quits his job and plans to go to Suqian with Luo for some materials. However, Li tags along and discovers their relationship. She is very upset, but as she really loves Luo, decides to "share" him with Jiang. On their way back to Nanjing, it becomes clear the dysfunctional love triangle cannot be sustained. Li leaves first, and Luo and Jiang also break up with some tears shed. Jiang is ambushed by a vengeful Lin and almost killed. He recovers and begins a relationship with another gay man.

The film chronicles the lives of a group of idealistic adolescents in a military art troupe in the People's Liberation Army during the Cultural Revolution. They experience love, lust, betrayal, and sufferings in the background of Mao-era songs and dances. Through the narration of Xiao Suizi, the film follows the story of two key characters, Feng Liu and Xiaoping He. Xiaoping He, a naive, and innocent new recruit from Beijing, and Feng Liu a morally impeccable character, whose comrades tease for being a real life Lei Feng. The pair also participate in the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979 and become heroes for their act of courage. Xiaoping He eventually becomes the target of her roommates bullying for her provincial naive mannerisms. A majority of the acts spearheaded by Hao Shuwen, the daughter of the regional commander. After the war, they are honorably discharged from the Army but struggle to make ends meet in the Reform-era China while they learn lessons from soul-crashing experiences of love, lust, betrayal, and heartbreak.

Huang Xuan was born on March 3, 1985 in Lanzhou, Gansu, China.
Huang Xuan graduated from Beijing Dance Academy in 2008.
Huang Xuan made his film debut in The Shaft the same year. Among his notable projects in earlier years were The Dream of Red Mansions and Driverless.
Huang Xuan rose to fame in 2014 with his performance in the television series Red Sorghum and film Blind Massage, and was awarded the Rising Actor award at the China TV Drama Awards. He also played supporting roles in The Golden Era directed by Ann Hui. In 2015, Huang starred in historical drama The Legend of Mi Yue and earned the title of "People's First Love" for his role as Huang Xie.
In 2017, Huang Xuan starred in the crime thriller film Extraordinary Mission directed by Alan Mak. He won the Best Action Movie New Performer award at the Jackie Chan Action Movie Awards for his performance in the film. The same year, he starred in the fantasy drama Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy by Jin Hezai, set in the fictional universe of Novoland. He was also cast as the male lead in Youth, a coming-of-age film directed by Feng Xiaogang and starred in Chen Kaige's fantasy mystery film Legend of the Demon Cat.
In 2018, Huang was cast in Cao Baoping's upcoming film The Perfect Blue, alongside Fan Bingbing. The same year, he starred in the modern workplace drama Entrepreneurial Age.
In 2019, Huang Xuan starred in the spy action drama Sniper directed by Guo Shubo and Bie Ke. The same year he starred in romance film Only Clouds Know directed by Feng Xiaogang.
