Education
Mahuet earned his doctorate in law from the University of Nancy in 1958. The university traces its origins to the sixteenth-century university founded in Pont-à-Mousson under the Dukes of Lorraine, which moved to Nancy in the eighteenth century. In 1970 the university was divided into several separate institutions, reflecting the expansion of French higher education after the 1968 reforms.
French doctoral studies in law combined advanced legal training with the civil law tradition that structured French legal education and practice in the twentieth century.
