(The Theory of Economics does not furnish a body of settle...)
The Theory of Economics does not furnish a body of settled conclusions immediately applicable to policy. It is a method rather than a doctrine, an apparatus of the mind, a technique of thinking, which helps its possessor to draw correct conclusions. It is not difficult in the sense in which mathematical and scientific techniques are difficult; but the fact that its modes of expression are much less precise than these, renders decidedly difficult the task of conveying it correctly to the minds of learners.

HENDERSON, Hubert Douglas was born in 1890 in Beckenham, Kent, England.
Bachelor of Arts University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom, 1912.
Deeply involved in public affairs through his membership of various official commissions and committees, his economic writings were invariably directed towards contemporary practical questions. His early experience as editor of the Nation involved him in political issues on the side of Keynes, though he later rejected much of Keynes’s General Theory. Though in many ways an old-fashioned orthodox economist, his teaching at Oxford was successful in an era during which Keynes’s ideas and other more recent developments were dominant.
State United Kingdom Board Trade, 1914-1918.
Lector Economics, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom,
1918-1923. Editor, Nation, 1923-1930.
Secretary, United Kingdom Economics Advisory Council, 1930-1934. Research Fellow, All Souls College, Drummond Professor, University Oxford, 1934-1952, 1945-1952.
