Admitted to Virginia bar but started journalistic career because of his increasing deafness. Owner, editor Norfolk American Beacon for 6 years. Member Virginia House of Delegates from Norfolk, 1828-1829, 29-30.

Delegate Virginia Constitutional Convention, 1829-1830. Board visitors College William and Mary, elected chancellor, 1871. Member, contributor to Virginia History Society, president, 1870.

Most of his life spent studying history of the United States and Virginia Author: The Virginia Convention of 1776, 1855. Discourse on the Life and Character of the Honorable Littleton Waller Tazewell, 1860. The Founders of Washington College, 1890.
