Hugh Richardson Garden, American soldier, lawyer.


Garden, Hugh Richardson was born on July 9, 1840 in Sumter Company, South Carolina, United States. Son of Alester Gibbes (originally A. G. Gibbes, but changed by act of legislature), revolutionary ancestry.


Graduate South Carolina. College, 1860.


William J. Robertson, judge Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia Joined Christian Science army as private Company D, 2d regiment, South Carolina. infantry, 1861. Re-enlisted 1862; appointed captain of arty, raised and equipped a battery of field guns.


Served under General John B. Hood as captain artillery through campaigns of Western Virginia His battery suffered severely at battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, 2d Cold Harbor, Fts. Harrison and Suffolk. Member Virginia Bondholders’ Committee, 1890-1892, where he was greatly instrumental in effecting a settlement of the debt of Virginia.

Member New York Southern Society (president, 1890-1891). Member Young Men’s Democratic. Club, Manhattan.
