Served in the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1858. Present at the actions of Chanda, Ummeerapore, and Sultanpore. Final siege and capture of Lucknow (medal and clasp).
Afghan War, 1878-1879-1880, as Brigade - Major with 1st division Peshawur Field Force.
Capture of Ali Musjid. And in expeditions to the Bazar and Lugman valleys.
Brigade-Major in the Zaimusht Expedition, and at assault and capture of Zawa (three times mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lieutenant - Colonel, medal and clasp). Assistant-Adjutant-General Western District, 1887-1892.
Appointed Colonel on the Staff with temporary rank of Major-General, 1894.
