Ditton was born at Salisbury. He studied theology, and was for some years a dissenting minister at Tonbridge, but on the death of his father he devoted himself to the congenial study of mathematics.

Excerpt from A Discourse Concerning the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, in Three Parts: Wherein, I. The Consequences of the Doctrine Are Stated Hypothetically; II. Through the influence of Isaac Newton he was elected mathematical master in Christ"s Hospital.
Ditton was the earliest writer to attempt to explain the phenomenon of capillarity on mathematical principles and he invented a method for finding the longditude, which has been since used on various occasions.
