He studied at the University of Oxford, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in 1980, a Master of Philosophy in 1982, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984.
Dixon began his academic career as a lecturer at Hertford College, University of Oxford, from 1983 to 1984. He then served as a lecturer at Birkbeck College, University of London, from 1984 to 1987, contributing to teaching in economics within a major evening higher-education institution.
In 1987, he joined the University of Essex as a Reader in the Department of Economics, a senior academic role reflecting his growing research and teaching reputation. He held this position until 1991.
From 1992 to 2006, Dixon was Professor of Economics at the University of York, where he played a significant role in academic development and economic research within the institution.
Since 2006, he has been Professor at Cardiff Business School, continuing his work as an economics educator and researcher. In addition, he has served as a visiting professor at Maharishi International University since 1986.
He married Carol Simpson on September 10, 1988, and has one child, Clare Lara.
