1914 graduate Faculty of Philosophy, Zurich University.
1906-1909 member, Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks). 1909 gave up politics and wokred for newspapers in Nikolayev,Tsaritsyn and Petrograd. After 1917 October Revol worked for newspaper Russkaya volya and Petrograd News Agency.
During Civil War worked for Red Army press and headed Information Department, newspaper Izvestiya TsIK: 1922-1926 ed, journal Novaya Rossiya. Exiled abroud after closure of journal. 1930 returned to Russia.
1933 readmitted to Party on the basis of his book Zapiski sovremenniky (Notes of a Contemporary). In which he expounded his revised views on the Soviet regime. 1935-1939 head Literature and Art Department, newspaper Pravda.
Wrote studies of Chekhov, Chernyshevskiy, Gorky, Herzen, Pushkin, Sholokhov and A. North. Tolstoy, et cetera
