He was Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford from 1992 to 2009. He went on to study physics at the University of Street Andrews, graduating in 1963. His doctoral advisor was Dirk Bijl, and he undertook research under John F. Allen.
Iain Campbell worked briefly at the University of Bradford before moving to the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory of Oxford University in South Parks Road, Oxford, in 1967, to work with the chemist Sir Rex Richards.
Campbell became a Fellow of Street John"s College, Oxford in 1987 and Emeritus Research Fellow in 2009.
