Studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography. Studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography. Graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography as a cameraman in 1929.
From 1921 lived in Moscow. While a student, worked in the film showroom of the State Academy of the Arts. At this stage began taking photographs.
Received training from such masters as Rodchenko, Shaikhet, Fridliand and Alpert. Worked as an assistant cameraman and photographer in film studios until 1931. At the same time did freelance work for Pravda and Izvestia, and the magazines Krasnaia Niva and USSR in Construction.
Also worked for Soiuzfoto. After 1931, devoted himself entirely to photography. In 1938, took part in an expedition to the North Pole as a photographer, to take pictures of North Pole I, a research station led by Ivan Papanin, which was drifting on an ice-flow.
Produced an impressive series of pictures, which were praised in the press, and for which he was awarded a medal. Worked for USSR in Construction, 1938-1941. Travelled throughout the Soviet Union, reporting on the life of the people.
During World War II, war correspondent for Krasnaia Zvezda, 1944-1946, then worked for the Soviet Information Office. His photographs of this period were a significant contribution to Soviet press photography. After World War II, worked for the magazines Ogonek and Smena, and from 1954 for Sovetskii Soiuz.
Exhibited in Moscow in 1967 and 1968, in Czechoslovakia in 1963, 1965 and 1967, in Helsinki in 1975 and in London in 1960.
