Among MacNeill’s more noted works is Lewis Mumford on the City, a six-part documentary on aspects of modern urban society as articulated and analyzed by the renowned urban planner. The series covers the history of cities and explores the contradictory nature - both creative and destructive - of urban living in the twentieth century. Also, of note is MacNeill’s Freud: The Hidden Nature of Man, which dramatizes Freud’s background as well as his personal life and ground-breaking psychological theories.
In his long career with the National Film Board of Canada, Ian MacNeill has written, produced, and directed numerous short documentary films for television broadcast. He has also written the script for a feature film on Freud as well as a novel.
The Battle for Saltbucket Beach, MacNeill’s first attempt at fiction, won the Gibson Award for best first Canadian novel.
