He attended the independent Trinity School of John Whitgift.
He was the Chief Executive Officer of Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE plc) from 2002 until he left the position as of 30 June 2013. Afterwards he gained a Bachelor in Economics from Durham University, where a highlight was scoring a try for the University IV VX rugby team He was an accountant for PricewaterhouseCoopers from 1983-1992.
In 1992, he joined Southern Electric, which became Scottish and Southern Energy in 1998.
