İbrahim Çalli was born on July 13, 1882, in Çal, Denizli, Turkey.
İbrahim Çalli revealed his passion for painting at an early age. He received his primary and secondary education at his native Çal and in İzmir.
He began to study painting in Istanbul where he had come to enter the military school. Then, Çalli was taught by the painter Ruben Efendi when he got acquainted with İzzettin Bey, son of Şeker Ahmet Pasha. The latter encouraged İbrahim to enrol at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 1906 where the artist had studied for three years.
The following year İbrahim Çalli presented his artworks “Çıplak Adam” and “Harekat Ordusu'nun Muhafız Alayı'ndan Maksut Çavuş” at the competition organized by the Ministry of Education. He won the scholarship which allowed him to pursue his artistic training in Paris where he came to the capital of France along with Hikmet Onat, Ali Sami Boyar, and Mehmet Ruhi Arel. Çalli had attended Fernand Cormon’s painting atelier at the School of Fine Arts for four years.
İbrahim Çalli started his career about 1899 in Instanbul where he collected various jobs to earn his living, including the lecturer of painting at the Vefa High School.
At the beginning of the First World War, Çalli became an assistant of the painter Salvatore Valeri at the School of Fine Arts. In 1917, he also joined the group of the artists in a studio of Şişli who produced paintings on war commissioned by the Minister of War Enver Pasha. Among Çalli’s colleagues were Hikmet Onat, Mehmet Ruhi Arel, Ali Sami Boyar, Hüseyin Avni Lifij and Namık İsmail.
Inspired by the artistic manner of the Russian painter Alexis Gritchenko who visited Istanbul in 1927, the painter adopted the style similar to graphics with more simple color palette than in impressionism. This time, his artworks reflected such events as Atatürk revolutions and Independence War. Soon, İbrahim Çalli returned to the impressionist technique and remained faithful to it till the end of his days.
As to the teaching activity, Çalli pursued it at his alma mater, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, where he had worked as a professor till his retirement in 1947.
