He was professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Miami. He developed the advanced Z-transform, used in digital control systems and signal processing.
He is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has received the Rufus Oldenburger Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the First Education Award of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Circuits and Systems Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Millennium Meda In 1993 he received the AACC"s Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award.
