Ichijo Goto was born in Kyoto, he was called to Edo by the Tokugawa Shogunate and was given a residence at Shinsenza, Shiba. His name was Mitsuyuki.

The Gotos had despised as vulgar minute and detailed carving. Disregarding the family tradition, however, Ichijo originated his own style of sketching realistically flowers, plants and animals. He also worked on iron, copper and silver which his family had disdained. He was given the title of hogen (a title reserved for high priests, artists and physicians). Among the distinguished followers of his style were Ikkin Funada, Isshin Wada and Tomei Araki.
