Background
Ichijo Tenne was born in 980. His name was Kanehito. He was the first son of Emperor Enyu and his consort, who was a daughter of Kaneie Fujiwara.

Career
Was proclaimed Crown Prince, heir to Emperor Kazan, (984). Enthroned in 986. Reigned for 25 years, to be succeeded by Emperor San jo, shortly before his death. It was during his reign that the Fujiwaras reached the height of their power and that such great women writers as Lady Seisho Nagon and Lady Murasaki Shikibu appeared. His was a golden age of poetry and arts.
