Ichikawa Beian was born in 1779.
Studied under his father, Kansai, Jutsusai Hayashi and Ritsuzan Shibano and based his calligraphic style after that of Beifutsu (Mi Fei), noted calligrapher of Sung dynasty.
Also excelled in the Reisho (ancient style of writing Chinese characters, equivalent to print hand of modern times). He also originated his own An style. Later served Lord of Kanazawa and was granted a fief of 400 koku. He had about 5,000 disciples. Modern calligraphy owes much to him. Wrote many books on the subject.
