Hara Ichinoshin studied under Yasushi (Shoshisai) Aizawa and Toko Fujita, noted Confucian scholars before he was trained at the Shoheiko, the Shogunate college in Edo.
Returning to Mito, he was devoted to the education of youths of his clan. He became an adviser to Yoshinobu Hitotsubashi (Tokugawa) and successfully maneuvered between Court officials and powerful feudal lords to make Yoshinobu the Shogun. He sought to recover the waning prestige of the Shogunate. As fame increased, he was regarded with jealousy by other Shogunate retainers. Was assassinated in August, 1867 by persons who believed that Hara was having bad influence of Shogun Yoshinobu.
