Studied at Law Faculty, Vienna University.
While a student joined revol movement. 1920 sent on underground assignment to Pland as member of Austrian Communist Party. Arrested soon afterwards and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
Released on bail after six months. After his release contacted Communist International in Moscow and carried out its assignments. 1923-1926 underground Communist International assignments in the Ruhr, Germany.
Then returned to Vienna and spent some time in jail. 1927 went to Moscow and then carried out underground work in various Centr and East European countries. 1929-1932 worked for central Party apparatus in Moscow, then sent abroad again.
17 July 1937, while still abroad, sent a letter to the Central Committee, CSPSU(B) notifying his resignation from the CPSLI(B). Then joined Trotsky’s 4th International.
