Igor Novikov was a Soviet modern pentathlete and Olympic Champion.

Novikov, Igor was born on October 19, 1929 in Drezna, Orekhovo-Zuevo district, Moscow Oblast’.

Career

Honoured Master of Sports, 1957. USSR champion (in the Erevan Dynamo team), 1953-1964. Olympic champion, 1956, 1964 (pentathlon).

2 silver medals, 1960. World champion, 1957-1962. Honoured Coach of the USSR, 1968.

Deputy chairman of the Sports Committee of the Armenian SSR from 1969. Vice-president of the International Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon Union from 1972.

Achievements

  • He competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, where he won a gold medal in the team competition (together with Aleksandr Tarasov and Ivan Deryugin. He won a silver medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, and he competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he won a gold medal in the team competition (together with Albert Mokeyev and Viktor Mineyev), and a silver medal in the individual competition.
