Graduated from Leningrad University.
Worked as a translator in a shipbuilding institute in Leningrad. In the early 1960s, organized a youth group (VSKHSON), which set as its aim resistance to communist dictatorship from socialist Christian positions. The group was unusual among dissident groups with its well-thoughtout programme and organization.
Arrested on 15 February 1967 with other members of his group, and sentenced to 7 years in prison, 8 years in camps and 5 years in exile for high treason. After spending 7 years in the Vladimir prison, was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Mordovia. Released 1987 and emigrated soon thereafter.
