Prior to the revolution, Ilona had internal medical practice at the Szövetség Street hospital.
On October 23, she took part in the student demonstration. On October 25, a nurse applied to the Szövetség Street Hospital, where they could not give her a job, so she was sent to the Péterfy Street Hospital, where she became a member of the Voluntary Rescue Service. On 1 November Ilona became the head of the hospital's subsidiary department. After November 11, she joined the illegal resistance movements, made flyers and took part in editing the magazine Élünk.
On November 20, Ilona Toth was arrested together with her companions and sentenced to death by being involved in organization and murdering, and in 1957 she was sentenced to death. She was hanged on 28 Juna 1957.
Ilona Toth was the most famous female figure of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, and War of Independence against the Soviet regime. She opted to engage in political struggle: she produced flyers and also participated in distributing an illegal paper.
In November of 2001, a statue of Dr. Ilona Tóth was placed in the hall of Semmelweis Medical University. She had been in the public eye for less than a year.
Ilona Toth took up arms against the Hungarian as well as the Soviet protectors of the Stalinist regime in Hungary.
