In 1964, he attended University of Engineering and Technology (Peshawar) and completed his Bachelor of Science
The University has grown leaps and bounds during his tenure and has established itself as one of the leading institutions in Pakistan. Imtiaz Gilani has also served as a Minister for Education, Information, Youth, Tourism and Culture (1999-2003) and as the acting executive director of the Higher Education Commission (Higher Education Commission) of Pakistan (2012 - 2013). Mr. Gilani ranks among the top educationalists in the country.
His early years were spent studying in Saint Joseph"s Convent School, Kohat and from 1959 to 1964 in Cadet College, Hasanabdal. in Civil Engineering in 1968.
After, which he did his Master of Science in Structural Engineering in 1969 and specialized in structural engineering in 1971 from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. In 1978, he attended Rutgers University in which he did his Master of Business Administration in Finance in 1981 from the Rutgers Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, United States.
(Member Beta Gamma Sigma, a fraternity of United States business school graduates). Imtiaz Gilani worked with Barnett and Herenchak, Incorporated.
Consulting Engineers, Broad Street, New Jersey, United States of America as a Design Engineer on civil engineering projects and then as a site engineer from 1972 till 1973.
From 1973- 1981 he worked as a project engineer at Sverdrup and Parcel, Incorporated., Consulting Engineers (New York, United States of America) where his principal area of concentration included designing and supervision of mass transit facilities such as subways, subway stations and mono-rail systems Imtiaz Gilani is also the Managing Director of Ambar Prefab (Pvt) from 1981 to date, a multi-discipline engineering company engaged in:
(a) Manufacture of pre-cast roofing systems (b) Civil engineering project-planning and consultancy (c) Construction of buildings (d) Construction of roads and bridges
Imtiaz Gilani is also an avid sportsman, especially keen on tennis and shooting. He is deeply interested in the socio-economic affairs of Pakistan.
His principal area of interest lies in the social sectors.
He keenly follows international issues that bear directly on Pakistan. He is interested in low-cost housing technology.
