In Koichijo was installed Crown Prince (1016), but this was deeply resented by Michinaga Fujiwara who had plans to make his grandson, Atsuyoshi, the son of his daughter Akirako and Emperor Icnijo, the Crown Prince. Fearful of the consequences, Atsuakira stepped down from the direct line of ascendancy, and was given the title by which he is now known. Later Michinaga changed his attitude toward him and gave him his daughter Hiroko in marriage. Later in life he retired into a monastery as a priest with the name Myokaku (1041).
