After graduate school, she joined the studio at the Central Children"s Theater. Her husband, Gennady Shpalikov, a heavy drinker, hanged himself in 1974. Gulaya committed suicide sixteen years later.
According to one investigation, the cause of her death was the overdose of sleeping pills.
