1918 joined Red Army. In same year fought against the White Army and Czechoslovakian Legion in Urals with a Party volunteer unit Commander and Extraord Commissar of Communications, 3rd Army.

June 1920-1924 Red Army Chief of Communications and Collegium member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat of Posts and Telegraphs. 1924-1929 head, Red Army Military-Technical Board. 1929-1936 head Red Army Board of Motorization and Mechanization.
1932-1934 also member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Revol Military Council. 1934-1937 member, Military Council, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics People's Commissariat of Defense. 1936-1937 also Red Army Chief of Armaments.
